Volunteers pace "Land of Liberty"
The Rancho Cordova Fourth of July celebration is a mighty collaboration of Rancho Cordova's best volunteers. When we say it takes a village to put on our celebration, we mean it.
Before it is over, we will likely put 200 or more of your neighbors and friends to work parking cars, painting signs, selling tickets, driving water trucks and much, much more.
Volunteers labor out in the parking lots directing traffic. They climb on ladders to hang signs and they walk into businesses to distribute flyers. They keep the water running, the electrical current flowing, the beer flowing.
We even have volunteers who do nothing but take care of other volunteers!
Each year, the Rancho Cordova Fourth of July Committee honors a volunteer whose contribution was especially critical.
In 2008, that volunteer was Brian Danzl, whose skill as an electrician helped make the lights come on, the French fries sizzle, the music soar and more. A friend of the Fourth of July for several years, Danzl's skills also play key roles at community celebrations like Kid's Day in the Park, iFest and the Cordova Community Christmas Tree Lighting.
While many outstanding volunteers make our Fourth of July event possible, at the end of the day, it was Danzl who was selected as the "2008 All American Volunteer," setting a high standard for service to his community.
This year, new volunteers have stepped forward to perform tasks that range from driving water trucks to keep down the dust, to forming our "Night Patrol Posse" that will keep an eye on Hagan Park while the rest of us are sleeping.
Indeed, it does take a village to put on the Rancho Cordova Fourth of July celebration, and for the most part, it is a community of volunteers.
Is it too late to volunteer? It's never too late!

Here are a few suggestions:
NIGHT PATROL
Suffer from insomnia? Have we got the job for you! Volunteers are needed to staff a night watch patrol of Hagan Park after dark July 1-5. We will supply transportation (golf carts), radios, other gear and all the hot coffee you can drink. Help be our "eyes and ears" as we provide security during the night hours of the festival. Park patrol: Responsible adults are being sought to provide night watch patrols in Hagan Park through July 5. If you are an insomniac in search of a community service project, this one's for you! Interested? Respond to Cal Schell at cal@gnomemajik.com
PARKING
Our parking operation is looking for strong, rugged individuals to help operate our parking operation. Individuals who are selected for this function can earn money for their favorite non-profit group. For more information, respond to Sean Still at sstill@alldata.com.
VOLUNTEER TLC
Volunteers are needed to provide Tender Loving Care to other volunteers during the event. This job will include picking up food from donors, taking care of set-up of an eating area, keeping it tidy and helping with other chores that relate to keeping our volunteers and police officers working the event happy! Please respond to at Mary Croxen at mecrec@sbcglobal.net.
WATER TRUCK
Drive a water truck to help us keep our event clean and green. It's fun and unlike your day job - unless you drive a water truck. Respond to Shelly Blanchard at grapeindep@aol.com
INFORMATION BOOTHS
Room is still available for groups and organizations who wish to have an information booth at the Fourth of July celebration. Reservations are REQUIRED for those planning a booth of any kind! For more information, rules and reservations, please respond to Carol Hutchings at team_mgmt@yahoo.com.
VENDOR BOOTHS
Are you planning on selling something? If your group is thinking of selling food, permits are needed and reservations REQUIRED. For more information, rules and reservations, please respond to Carol Hutchings at team_mgmt@yahoo.com.
BEER GARDEN
This may be one of the most fun jobs of the weekend. Be a bartender at one of our two Beer Gardens! For more information and to volunteer, please respond to Conrade Mayer at 1cmmayer@comcast.net
COLD, HARD CASH
The Fourth of July Committee can always put your contribution to work. If your organization can assist us with a donation of any size, we pledge to put it to good use in paying for the huge amount of infrastructure needed to produce the Rancho Cordova Fourth of July. Become a Fourth of July sponsor and take advantage of the advertising opportunities that come along with it! If you are interested in making a donation, please respond to team_mgmt@yahoo.com.
GOT A HAMMER?
Volunteers willing to help with a range of chores including installing signage and other set-up activities can report for work parties at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 3 at the Baseball Hut near Sullivan Field in Hagan Park. For details, contact Shelly Blanchard at 273-5704 or grapeindep@aol.com.
